Burping is normal until it becomes excessive.
Normally the air we swallow dissolves a little in your stomach acid, but mostly it dissolves in the water contained in your stomach.

In Hiatal Hernia Syndrome the stomach gets compressed and it's pushed up into the diaphragm and air that you've swallowed can get trapped and you'll burp.

GERD (acid reflux) has burping as an associated symptom. When the acid comes up your esophagus you tend to swallow more and that results in more burping.

H. pylori is a common infection associated with Hiatal Hernia Syndrome that is also associated with gastritis and a stomach ulcer. Burping is associated with this bacterial infection. Long-term effects from this infection are severe, so you want to get it properly tested.

If you're taking an antacid (PPI) you are suppressing acid levels and therefore normal digestion and food sits in your stomach too long. Secondary to this bacteria flourish leading to fermentation which causes bloating and gas. You can also be diagnosed with SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) because the small intestine is the next 'stop' for food after the stomach. SIBO results in gas, bloating, and burping.

If you suffer with burping it's important to get to the root cause of why it's happening so that more severe damage to your stomach and/or esophagus is not allowed to progress.
